Star Flower

The Star Flower Orbea variegata is a succulent plant native to South Africa. Until it flowers it looks like a cactus, but it isn't closely related to cacti. The flower is quite unusual, being shaped like a five-pointed star.

The plant is easy to grow, and like most succulents needs little water in summer, but benefits from full sun. It is a small plant, usually less than 12 centimetres, (five inches) high, but can be quite wide. It can be grown from cuttings.

The flowers come in autumn. In our area, April and May are the most likely months for flowers.

The Children's book linked to from the picture of its cover opposite, is about something completely different from the plant this page is about.
